7th Pindus Crossing: six days of hiking across the northern Pindus from Metsovo to Konitsa, about 120 km on the long routes (15-25 km a day). Each day you can switch category: Challenge (long route, guided), Elite (long route, unguided, needs GPS navigation skills), Elite Race (long route, timed each day, overall winner and medals for the top three men and women), Discovery (8-15 km, guided; see the separate listing), Rest Day (ride the coach to the next stop) or Supporter (no hiking). Day 1 (16/7): coach from Athens, Karaiskaki Square 15:00 (stops at Chaidari, Evinochori and Ioannina), night in a Metsovo hotel. Day 2: Lake Aoos - Mavrovouni refuge - Mavrovouni (1,997 m) - Flegga (2,157 m) and the Flegga lakes - Arkoudorema - Aoos river - Valia Calda refuge at Vovousa; 25 km, +810/-1,080 m, 10-12 h. Day 3: Vovousa - Valia Stathi - Distrato; 20 km, +540/-470 m, 7-9 h. Day 4: Distrato - Boulmpasi spring - Valia Kirna - Agia Paraskevi monastery - Samarina; 15 km, +720/-450 m, 7-8 h. Day 5: Samarina - Smolikas Geros summit (2,637 m, second highest in Greece) - Smolikas Drakolimni - Pades; 25 km, +1,200/-1,500 m, 10-12 h. Day 6: Vrysochori - Neraidovrysi - Kartero pass - Gamila I (2,497 m) on Tymfi - Astraka refuge; 20 km, +1,860/-750 m, 10-12 h. Day 7 (22/7): Astraka - Tymfi Drakolimni - Davalista ridge - Stomio monastery - Konitsa bridge; 15 km, +420/-1,900 m, 10-12 h; coach to Athens at 16:00, arriving about 23:00. Luggage moves between stops by bus or 4x4, so you hike with a day pack. Nights in a Metsovo hotel, guesthouses in Distrato and Samarina (double to quadruple rooms) and dormitories at the Valia Calda, Munti Smolikas (Pades) and Astraka refuges (bring a sheet set or sleeping-bag liner). Springs along most days, except day 5. Included: HMCS mountain guides and leaders (1 per 10 in the guided groups), all transport by the Mountain Bus and 4x4 support, all nights, all breakfasts, mushroom dinner in Samarina, party in Distrato with one drink, Pindus Crossing dry-fit T-shirt, radios, group first-aid kit, tour-operator liability insurance and 24% VAT.
