Three-day winter mountaineering trip in the northern Pindus just after Christmas, led by HMCS mountain guides (1 guide per 8 people). For experienced hikers only: very good fitness, a completed ML2 mountain school or equivalent winter experience, and safe use of crampons and ice axe are required; not for beginners. Day 1 (26/12): minibus from Athens (08:30) or Thessaloniki (09:30), with pick-ups along the way, to Gavros near Kalambaka for a Via Ferrata session on the rocks of the Meteora area (belay and movement techniques), then on to Samarina; night in a traditional guesthouse, dinner at the village grill houses. Day 2 (27/12): the big winter traverse of Smolikas from Kerasovo, past the snow-covered Smolikas Drakolimni and, if weather, snow and the group allow, up Geros (2,637 m), the highest summit of the Pindus and the second highest in Greece; long descent to Pades and night at the Smolikas refuge. About 20 km, ±1,500 m, 10-12 hours; physically hard, moderate technical difficulty, and conditions can make it much harder. Day 3 (28/12): breakfast and return, arriving about 19:00 in Thessaloniki and 20:00 in Athens. Included: HMCS mountain guides, all transport from Athens and Thessaloniki, one night in a Samarina guesthouse with breakfast, one night at the Smolikas refuge with breakfast and dinner, Via Ferrata gear, crampons and ice axe if needed, radios, group first-aid kit, insurance and 24% VAT. Not included: personal winter gear (boots, pack, etc.) and drinks. Places are limited and there is no fixed registration deadline.
