The 6th Retzakas Trail Run is a celebration of trail running and power walking in the semi-mountainous area of Plokamiana, Tzitzifia, Perivolia, Kefali, Aerinos, Pappadiana and Vathi (Inachori, Municipality of Kissamos), 10 km before Elafonisi. It includes the 24.5 km Retzakas CHALLENGE, the 6.8 km Retzakas ENTRY, the 1,450 m Agroulidaki Trail for children and side events on Saturday 6 February 2027. The race was first held in February 2022 and a second, longer route was added in 2023. Start and finish at the old primary school of Plokamiana. The Retzakas CHALLENGE is open to men and women aged 18 and over, with a limit of 160 participants. Intermediate cutoff at Kefali (2nd main station, km 11.9): 2 hours 30 minutes. The course passes through six villages and reaches its highest point, 714 m, at the monumental olive tree of Aerinos. It carries 1 ITRA point and is a UTMB Index 20K race. Feed stations, all of which are also checkpoints: km 2 Paliosternes, km 4.9 Tzitzifia, km 9.6 Perivolia, km 11.9 Kefali, km 16 Theodoriana, km 18.3 Pappadiana, km 20.6 Vathi. The entry includes a bib with 4 safety pins and timing chip, a Retzakas 2027 technical T-shirt by Anthrax, a Retzakas 500 ml sports flask by Anthrax, a cloth pouch bag, a finisher medal, water and food at specific points on the course, medical cover, food, water and treats after the race, and individual photos by EnergyPhotos. The course is orange: orange ribbons and arrows with an orange diamond; shared sections are marked in both colours. Awards: overall men and women; men and women up to 39, 40–49 and 50+. Overall winners are not also awarded in the age groups, and an age group is awarded only if at least three people take part in it. Water stations do not hand out plastic bottles: filled cups made of recyclable material are given to drink on the spot, so bring your own cup, bottle, flask or hydration bladder if you want to carry water. There is no mandatory gear; trail shoes are recommended, as most of the course is dirt with plenty of stones, and poles are allowed. Bicycles, motorbikes, scooters or any other means of transport on the course are forbidden. Pets are allowed under their owner's constant supervision and must be on a lead, as sheep and goats graze along parts of the course. A sweep team follows the last runners and walkers on both courses. Red-and-white tape marks points where passage is forbidden. Disqualification for littering, cutting or bypassing the course, and unsporting behaviour such as pushing, violence or racist behaviour; exceeding the time limits or missing a checkpoint also voids the result. Registration is online only and closes earlier if places fill up. It is confirmed only by immediate payment through the online registration system; unpaid registrations are not valid, and there are no refunds for any reason. Optional extras at registration: Retzakas running shorts (+€20) and a bus Chania – Kissamos – Plokamiana and back (€5, paid at online registration). The bus leaves KTEL Chania at 07:00 and Kissamos Town Hall at 07:45, arriving at Plokamiana at about 08:40; it returns from Plokamiana at 15:30 with stops at Kissamos and Chania. There are no intermediate stops and departure times are strict. By car, Plokamiana is on the Kissamos – Elos – Chrysoskalitissa road (the road to Elafonisi), 29 km from Kissamos and 60 km from Chania; the start/finish is 400 m from the marked parking area. Race pack pickup: Chania, Wednesday 3 and Thursday 4 February 2027, 19:00–21:00, Charodia Sports Centre, Perivolia; Kissamos, Friday 5 February, 18:00–19:00, Kissamos Town Hall; Plokamiana, Saturday 6 February, 14:00–18:00, Plokamiana primary school (start/finish), during the side events; Plokamiana, Sunday 7 February, 08:00–10:00, at the start/finish race office (CHALLENGE pickup ends at 09:30). Packs are not handed out after the races, even if paid. Bag storage is available at the start/finish. Safety cover by the local Hellenic Red Cross, the Police and the Fire Service, with a doctor and an ambulance on standby. The organisers do not insure participants. The races go ahead in rain unless Civil Protection cancels outdoor activities. If postponed due to extreme weather, they will be held on Sunday 21 February 2027 at the same time and place.
