One-day hike in the Mantamia area of Parnassos, Phocis: about 7.5 km point to point, about 3.5 hours of walking, +90/-500 m, highest point 820 m, lowest 340 m. Grade 1/5, easy: an easy mountain route suitable for people with little hiking experience and moderate fitness. The hike starts at Ano Polydrosos (Souvala), at 780 m, on an uphill dirt road for 650 m to the chapel of Profitis Ilias (820 m). It then leaves the village and follows the stream downhill past old mills, the Mantamia fulling mills (nerotrives for woollen clothes) and the old Polydrosos hydroelectric plant, one of the first power plants of the area. Small waterfalls and footbridges accompany the whole route, with several crossings of the stream; at the largest waterfall, the Mantamia waterfall, there is a natural pool where you can even swim. On the way you also see the ruins of the Mantamia tower, possibly a 13th-century Frankish tower or watchtower. The route ends at the exit of the Mantamia trail, heading towards the square of Kato Polydrosos. The coach drops the group at the start and picks it up at the end; things not needed on the hike stay on the coach. After the hike the coach takes the group to a local taverna. Approximate programme (depends on the group, weather and traffic): 07:30 departure from the last pick-up, 08:30 coffee and toilet break, 10:30 hike starts (the event summary gives ~10:00), 12:00 rest and snack break, 14:00 back at the coach, 14:30 taverna, 17:30 departure for Athens, about 20:15 arrival in Athens. Fee €38. It includes the hike and swim, coach transport from and to Athens (fuel, tolls, driver's fee and meals), certified, qualified and experienced mountain guides and their fees, planning and organisation, radio communication between the guides, a group first-aid kit, photos of the trip, civil liability insurance and anything else needed for the trip; anything not listed is not included. Bring hiking boots, poles (useful but optional), a backpack, long hiking trousers or leggings, a quick-dry top, fleece, jacket, windbreaker/waterproof, 2 L of water, snacks, a personal first-aid kit (with any special medication), wet wipes and tissues, a bag for your rubbish, and extra shoes, socks and a change of clothes to leave on the coach.
