Important Information
Free guided walk at the Archaeological Site of Rhamnous, part of «Marathon Month 2026», led by archaeologist Martin Kreeb, president of the Friends of the Archaeological Museum of Marathon.
The ancient deme of Rhamnous belonged, with Marathon, Trikorythos and Oinoe, to the coastal trittys of the Aiantis tribe.
Inhabited since prehistoric times, its fortress overlooking the Euboean Gulf played a role in the Persian Wars.
The great temple held the statue of Nemesis by Agorakritos, pupil of Pheidias (5th c.
BC); the walls date from the 4th c.
BC. The site was abandoned after Emperor Arcadius banned the worship of the ancient gods in 399 AD. The walk covers all five elements of an ancient deme: the access road from Marathon; the sanctuaries (the great temple of Nemesis and the small temple of Nemesis and Themis); an extensive necropolis with family tombs; the defences, with very well preserved walls with two gates and an acropolis with garrison barracks; and the town, with houses with courtyards, streets with drainage, stairs, a gymnasium, a theatre and places for stone stelae with council decrees.
Warning: the descent to the town along the funerary road is difficult.
Required: walking or mountain shoes, poles for those who are not very agile, a hat and water (there is no kiosk or shop at the site).
Keep the site clean and do not uproot plants.
The tour is free; site admission is €5, free for some categories (e.g.
children and young people up to 25, over-65s, the unemployed; see culture.gov.gr).
Registration through the online form closes when 40 people have signed up.
