Two-day trip from Athens to southern Laconia. Day 1 (Saturday 14/11): about 5 hours' drive to Monemvasia, then a hike exploring the whole rock: Lower Town, Upper Town with the church of Agia Sofia, the paths around the rock and the lighthouse outside the walls if conditions allow; about 9 km, +/-412 m, 4-5.5 hours with stops. Evening walk and dinner in the castle town; night in a guesthouse by the sea opposite the rock, double room with breakfast. Day 2 (Sunday 15/11): hike at Cape Maleas on the Agia Irini path, past the historic Agia Irini monastery and the chapel of Agios Georgios: about 13 km, +/-376 m, about 4.5 hours, in a wild coastal landscape; then the petrified palm forest at Agios Nikolaos, before the drive back to Athens. Grade easy-moderate: good fitness needed but no technical difficulty. Departures from Athens: Rouf 06:30 (corner of Amfipoleos and Konstantinoupoleos, opposite the suburban railway), Elaionas 06:45 (on Iera Odos), Viamax 07:00 (Athinon Ave, by the kiosk at the old Viamax factory). €195 per person.
