Important Information
Loop hike around Ano Doliana, a protected traditional settlement at about 1,000 m on the northern slopes of Parnon: 9.5 km, 4 hours including stops, +350/-300 m (as listed).
Grade: Easy+ (1.5/5), suitable for all hikers; the organizer describes the route as gentle with little height difference.
Terrain: rocky and trodden path, forest road, asphalt.
From Ano Doliana a downhill path leads to the Agiannis ravine and a short walk beside the stream, then onto a trail that a team of the organizer's volunteers cleared, dug, pruned and waymarked over many days.
Views open over the Tripoli plateau to Mainalo, Artemisio, Helmos and Erymanthos.
The route continues on farm road and old path under the chestnut forest to the chapel of Ai-Stratigos, built according to local tradition on the site of an ancient sanctuary, for a rest stop.
A farm road leads to the ravine of the Gareatis river (locally the Dolianitiko river), where the route follows the riverbed for about 2 km under giant plane trees, and returns through the lanes of the village.
Trip leader: mountain guide Giorgos Karagiannis, who looks after the village's trail network and was among those who opened the route; he will also show the group the village's traditional fountains, listed buildings and chapels.
Coach departure 07:00, return 20:30 (both indicative).
